What it studies
Clinical psychology connects psychological research with assessment and treatment. McNally’s 2024 review examines the clinical-science approach, including how psychological treatments are evaluated and delivered. His account connects present-day treatment research with earlier training models. It is one documented perspective within the field.
History and people
Lightner Witmer reported that he began clinic work at the University of Pennsylvania in March 1896, and he published his account in The Psychological Clinic in 1907. He wrote that the word clinical names a method and not a place. A recent review says that in the first half of the 20th century physicians opposed psychotherapy by psychologists, so clinical psychologists were largely confined to developing, administering and interpreting mental tests. After World War II the Veterans Administration asked the American Psychological Association for a training curriculum, and leaders met at the University of Colorado to formulate the scientist-practitioner model.
People and documented roles

Only Witmer's own retrospective account documents his role here; the sources opened do not document other early contributors, women or scholars outside the United States.
Dated milestones
Methods
McNally discusses randomized controlled trials as a way to evaluate psychological treatments. His review describes the Unified Protocol as a transdiagnostic approach: it addresses problems shared across different disorders, including avoidance behavior and difficulties regulating emotions. These examples show a link between research and practice; they do not catalog all clinical assessment methods or therapies.
Training and applications
The Unified Protocol illustrates how treatment can address problems shared across disorders rather than relying solely on separate disorder-specific manuals. In the United Kingdom, Clinical psychologist is a protected title regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council under the Health Professions Order 2001. This profile does not establish current licensing requirements.
Boundaries and limits
Witmer’s text is a retrospective account using the terminology of its time, not proof of a single founder. McNally’s review emphasizes the United States and the clinical-science approach, with selected international examples. It does not provide a global account or a complete treatment catalog. The boundaries with counseling psychology and clinical neuropsychology are not resolved here.
Evidence behind the claims
Witmer reports that clinic work at the University of Pennsylvania psychology laboratory began in March 1896 with a child referred for chronic bad spelling.
In Witmer's account, children referred by parents or teachers received physical and mental examinations, were diagnosed, and received recommendations for medical and educational treatment; he wrote that the term clinical implies a method and not a locality.
Witmer's article was published in 1907 in volume 1 of The Psychological Clinic, a journal he described as founded to publish the clinic's results.
A review says that after World War II the Veterans Administration asked the American Psychological Association to establish a formal curriculum to train clinical psychologists, and that leaders convened at the University of Colorado and formulated the Boulder or scientist-practitioner model.
The same review says that in the first half of the 20th century physicians opposed psychologists who practiced psychotherapy, so clinical psychologists were largely confined to developing, administering and interpreting mental tests.
In the United Kingdom, the Health and Care Professions Council is the regulator for practitioner psychologists, Clinical psychologist is a protected title, and the Health Professions Order 2001 is the relevant legislation.
McNally’s 2024 review discusses randomized controlled trials as a means of evaluating psychological treatments.
McNally describes the Unified Protocol as a transdiagnostic treatment approach targeting problems shared across different disorders, including avoidance behavior and emotion regulation problems.
