History of the fields
Dated milestones taken from the field profiles, in date order. Each is labeled by what happened: a publication, a society formed, a recognition decision, a name adopted. Where the sources give no supported date, the profile leaves it out and the date is not guessed here.
How to read these dates
Fields emerge through many hands over many years. A society's founding year is the year that society formed, and a United States recognition year is a decision by one US body. Neither is the birth of a field, and no row names a sole founder.
