What it studies

Community psychology looks past individual factors to how social, cultural, economic, political, environmental and international forces shape people. Its stated aim is positive change, health and empowerment at individual and systemic levels. The Society for Community Research and Action says it serves many disciplines focused on community research and action.

History and people

In 1965, thirty-nine participants met in Swampscott, Massachusetts. An essay by Jacob Kraemer Tebes with Ashley Simons-Rudolph on the Society for Community Research and Action's website describes the meeting as the founding of United States community psychology. The same page lists earlier programs, including Yale Psycho-Educational Clinic action research, the Fairweather Lodge program and the Primary Mental Health Project, and a workforce analysis for a 1961 Presidential Commission. This account concerns the United States only.

People and documented roles

The sources checked for this profile name no individual contributors.

The Swampscott page names no organizer and mentions Annette Rickel only as a later describer of the conference's purpose, so no contribution to the field is documented for her here. The other sources name no individuals. Women and scholars outside the United States are not documented in the opened sources.

Methods

Community psychology organizations describe action-oriented research to develop, implement and evaluate programs, and collaborative relationships with community members, groups and organizations. They also describe consulting with organizations and analyzing government, civic life and workplace settings. The sources opened here are self-descriptions by one community psychology organization, not independent methods texts.

Training and applications

The Society for Community Research and Action is Division 27 of the American Psychological Association and states a mission of promoting health and empowerment and preventing problems in communities, groups and individuals. A training page on the society's site lists roles a graduate degree can lead to and links to the society's list of academic programs; it says nothing about licensure. Titles and licenses are set by regulators in each jurisdiction, not by this guide.

Boundaries and limits

The 1965 account concerns the United States only and does not date community psychology in other countries. It names no conference organizer. All sources opened here come from one organization, the Society for Community Research and Action, and independent or international histories were not opened.
