What it studies

Environmental psychology studies the relationship between people and their physical surroundings. The International Association for People-Environment Studies describes its topic as the transactions and interactions between people and their socio-physical surroundings, covering built and natural environments. The association brings together environmental psychology with architecture, geography, urban design, sociology, planning and other disciplines.

History and people

Enric Pol proposes four stages, with early roots in Germany in the early twentieth century. William Ittelson used the term environmental psychology at a 1964 United States conference. A City University of New York program began in 1967, and Harold Proshansky, Ittelson and Rivlin edited a 1970 volume. The Environmental Design Research Association launched the journal Environment and Behavior in 1969. In Europe, the first International Architectural Psychology Conference met in 1970, and Terence Lee and David Canter began a University of Surrey program in 1973.

People and documented roles

  • William Ittelson. Psychologist who used the term Environmental Psychology at a 1964 US conference and co-edited a 1970 volume
    • Used the generic term Environmental Psychology at a 1964 conference in the United States. [1]
    • Co-developed a 1958 CUNY project on psychiatric hospital design with Harold Proshansky and co-edited the 1970 volume Environmental Psychology. [1]

People are limited to those named in Pol's account, mainly in North America and Britain. Pol also names scholars in Sweden, France, Germany, Italy and Spain, but those passages were not turned into claims here.

Methods

The sources opened describe the field's institutions and labels more than its methods. The International Association for People-Environment Studies describes the work as interdisciplinary, and Pol's history is organized around conferences, programs and the labels used at different times. This profile does not list specific research procedures.

Training and applications

Pol reports that university training programs in environmental psychology were created in the 1970s and 1980s, including a City University of New York master's degree, and that early North American work concerned the design of psychiatric hospitals. The sources opened do not describe a licensed profession or protected title.

Boundaries and limits

Pol writes that the boundaries of his stages are somewhat fuzzy, and he states that his series does not intend to offer a comprehensive review. Labels such as architectural psychology, ecological psychology and psychologie de l'espace coexisted in the 1960s and 1970s. Saunders reports that the American Psychological Association established Division 34 (Population and Environmental Psychology) in the 1970s, and notes that environmental psychology operates both as a subdiscipline within psychology and as a wider field, which has caused some confusion.

Evidence behind the claims

  • The International Association for People-Environment Studies describes itself as a multidisciplinary association fostering the interdisciplinary study of transactions and interactions between people and their socio-physical surroundings, covering built and natural environments, with disciplines including environmental psychology, architecture, geography, urban design, sociology and planning.
