What it studies

Quantitative psychology develops and applies statistical, measurement and multivariate methods for psychological research. APA Division 5 says it draws together specialists in quantitative and qualitative methods and specializes in evaluation, measurement, assessment, statistics and qualitative inquiry. The Society of Multivariate Experimental Psychology describes its members as researchers interested in multivariate quantitative methods and their application to substantive problems in psychology.

History and people

The sources opened document organizations, not an origin of the field. The Society of Multivariate Experimental Psychology states that it was founded in 1960. Guilford's 1936 book Psychometric Methods, cited on the Psychometric Society's page, covered topics from psychophysical methods and psychological scaling to factor analysis. In 2014 APA Division 5, previously called Evaluation, Measurement and Statistics, was renamed Quantitative and Qualitative Methods, a naming decision within one American association.

People and documented roles

The sources checked for this profile name no individual contributors.

The sources opened do not name the founders of the Society of Multivariate Experimental Psychology and describe no individual contributors to quantitative psychology as a whole, so no people are listed. Workshop leaders and page authors named in the sources are not documented as contributors to the field's development.

Dated milestones

  • 1960Society or organization formed. Year. The Society of Multivariate Experimental Psychology states it was founded this year. A society milestone, not the start of quantitative psychology. [1][2]
  • 2014Name adopted. Year.APA Division 5 was renamed Quantitative and Qualitative Methods, a naming decision within one American association. [5]

Methods

The sources opened name multivariate designs, statistical analysis, factor analysis, psychological scaling and psychophysical methods. According to an APS Observer article, the Society of Multivariate Experimental Psychology funds instructors for methodology workshops at the annual convention of the Association for Psychological Science, including an introduction to structural equation modeling and a workshop on data processing and workflow strategies for functional imaging with fMRI.

Training and applications

An APS Observer article on the society says its members include researchers in personality, development, cognition, organizations, education and social psychology who build multivariate systems into their theories and experiments. Its outreach aims to give psychologists, including those at colleges and universities without advanced quantitative training, access to multivariate methods. The sources opened do not describe training routes, degrees or professional titles.

Boundaries and limits

Psychometrics and quantitative psychology overlap heavily; the Psychometric Society's page quotes a contributor saying the field is now often called quantitative psychology. The Society of Multivariate Experimental Psychology is a small society with membership capped at 65 and does not represent the whole area. The sources opened do not name its founders or document individual contributions.
